Child of the Wolf is all about Granite, a Siberian Husky puppy. He escapes from the kennel in which he has been raised. He finds himself facing hunger, and loneliness. He has to defend himself against bears and other things that he does not know or understand.
Then when it seems that it is as bad as it will get he comes upon a pack of wolves. To Granite's astonishment they do not eat him. Snowdrift, the leader of the pack, takes him and cares for him. The other wolves in the pack do not like Granite except Snowdrift does. She lost her puppies to hunters and that is why she takes him in and cares for him like he was one of her own. The wolves do not like Granite they think he is inferior because he is slow and weak. The wolves in the pack bite and nip at him all the time when Snowdrift is not looking. One day it becomes just too hard to bear and he runs away. He comes to another pack and tries to greet them nicely but they try to eat him. He barley gets away. Snowdrift goes looking for him and gets shot by some illegal hunters in the process. Granite goes back to his pack and they accept him. This time he accepts all the nips and shoves with out protest because he knows that it is nothing compared to what the other pack did to him. When Snowdrift does not come back the pack goes looking for her. They find her under a tree with a puddle of blood around her head. Snowdrift does recover but not completely she goes blind. Granite saves her life by stopping her from falling of a cliff. He is finally accepted into the pack. He even defeats on of the bullies that were mean to him.
